Given that it is St. Patrick's Day and I'm always on the hunt for something unusual, receiving an email that listed an Irish Whiskey at $24.99 made me move. At first, I scoffed because it was super cheap compared to others. I decided to give it a chance as I am a huge fan of Dunville Irish Whiskey and usually really enjoy their releases.
I do admit that the label and the story it tells captured me sealing my decision to bring it home. The label is beautiful with a side mural of Victoria Square from the 1800s and talks of the birth of the brand. The shape of the bottle and style of label is wholly Dunville. That being said, I think it is one of the lightest Irish whiskeys I have ever seen.
The color is a very, very soft golden hue in the bottle becoming clear in the glass. The ABV is 40% which is a bit on the lower side and the nose is so subtle that you have to nose it a few times to gain the character. In a way, it is very new make spirit without the nostril burn which is not a bad thing. It is like if Octomore and Gentleman Jack had a baby but a wee one. There are a lot of charcoal notes with a lingering of vanilla, caramel, and apple tarts. The nose carried over into the taste. It was a bit oily but did not linger long after swallowing which surprised me due to the initial strength of the charcoal notes. I find it to be a good evening starter or perhaps a palate cleanser in between courses.
