Rémy Martin: VSOP, A Fine Champagne Cognac

Updated: Jan 8, 2021

Whenever I think of France, as a spirit loving person, the two things that come to mind, are the famous Brandies from the Cognac region and the sparkling wines from the province of Champagne, bringing us to the topic of Fine Champagne Cognac. What is it exactly? The first time I heard this term, I started imagining a brandy with bubbles in it, but as you will now find out, I was drastically wrong.

Firstly, a Cognac is a Brandy that originates from the AOC (Appellation d’origine contrôlée) in the Cognac commune, using grapes grown in the six designated areas or 'crus' of the region, namely Fins Bois, Bois à terroirs, Bons Bois and Bois Ordinaires and lastly the Grande and Petite Champagne areas. As you might be guessing right now Champagne Cognac is made from the eau-de-vie grown in the Grande Champagne or the Petit Champagne area.

A Fine Champagne Cognac on the other hand is made from a blend of the eau-de-vie grown in the two Champagne areas, out of which 50% of the blend is from the Grand Champagne terroir.

Rémy Martin, since 1724 has been one of the most prominent and famous Cognac houses that have been producing Fine Champagne Cognac. A bottle of theirs that caught my eye was that of the Very Superior Old Pale or as we commonly know it, the VSOP, this eau-de-vie blend is aged for 4 to 12 years in French Limousine oak barrels due to which this wonderful spirit takes up an enamoring Copper Gold color.

On the nose one can note the exquisite grapes which are accompanied by hints of fig, apple and some floral sweetness. With a couple drops of water the cognac opens up, giving way to a few citrus notes as well.

The moment I took a sip of this amazing spirit, I was taken back to the beautiful French vineyards, the taste of the grapes along with the honey and citrus with a refreshing kick of fennel brought me in terms with the delicately complex flavor that a Rémy Martin is known to have.

Towards the end it leaves us with a spicy marzipan finish along with a bit of mint that makes one crave for another short tour of the beautiful Cognac vineyards. Overall, the VSOP is a drink which has a heavy palate and a smooth finish.

Now you have another New Year’s resolution, to keep a Rémy Martin VSOP in your cabinet!!

Cheers and a Splendid New Year to you!!!
